Osborne House (near East Cowes) open every day. Designed in the style of an Italian villa by Prince Albert and Thomas Cubitt for Queen Victoria in 1840, the state and private apartments are still furnished as they were in her time. The children's play house (The Swiss Chalet) contains her writing desk and collection of porcelain. Prince Albert supervised the landscaping making use of the natural surroundings. It is said that every type of English tree is planted in the extensive grounds. St. Mildred's (Whippingham) Whilst in the area of Osborne why not pop over to Prince Albert's whimsical church. Built as the parish church for the Osborne estate, Albert tried to re-create the vision of a Rhineland castle. The church is full of memorials to royalty and many of the minor royals are buried within the church precincts. |
