Haywards Heath - West Sussex

Gardens

Haywards Heath lies amidst a number of great gardens.
Amongst these are the following :-

Borde Hill Gardens

Lying just outside Haywards Heath, Borde Hill Gardens has an Italian Garden. This 19th century garden houses many rarities from China and the Himalayas.  The gardens have large woods and parkland and play host to many different entertainments throughout the summer months, from productions of Shakespeare to rock concerts. There is also an excellent restaurant - Jeremy’s at Borde Hill.

High Beeches

A few miles up the A23 from Haywards Heath lies High Beeches, twenty acres of gardens and woodland together with water gardens.  A Tree Trail winds its way through the gardens and their rare plants.

Leonardslee

Lying a few miles to the west of Haywards Heath, during the azalea and rhodendendron seasons, this 240 acres is a joy to behold.  It has 7 lakes and deer, wallabies and various wildfowl can be observed. A Bonsai exhibition and a collection of Victorian motor cars may also be enjoyed.

A number of National Trust Properties are within a short drive of Haywards Heath.

Wakehurst Place

.

Just north of Haywards Heath lies Wakehurst Place, owned by the National Trust but run by Kew Gardens. Often described as one of the most beautiful gardens in England, it is home to the Millenium Seed Bank and is a delight all year round.  Trees from around the world, including giant redwoods, water gardens and a walled garden are just a few of the delights on offer.  The Elizabethan mansion is particularly pretty and has lovely fireplaces and ceilings.

The Millenium Seed Bank, officially opened by HRH the Prince of Wales in November 2000, will protect more than 20,000 species of plants from around the world from extinction and is one of the largest international plant conservation programmes ever undertaken.

Nymans Gardens

Lying 7 miles to the north of Haywards Heath, Nymans is a pretty, accessible garden. It has woodland walks and a wild garden as well as a historic collection of plants and trees. Part of the house is open, the library is of particular interest, and the drawing room is a reflection of the Messel family interests.

Sheffield Park Gardens

Lying seven miles to the east of Haywards Heath, this magnificent landscaped garden was designed, in the 18th century, by ‘Capability’ Brown.  Laid out around four lakes, linked by waterfalls, the rare trees and shrubs from around the world are a stunning sight.  The trees look particularly magnificent in autumn when the colours stun the visitor. The famed Bluebell Railway lies almost next door to these gardens.
